A key that pops off feels like a disaster, but it’s usually a five-minute fix if nothing is broken. The catch is that every keyboard type clips in differently, and prying from the wrong edge is exactly how the tiny plastic hooks snap. So before I touch anything, I figure out what kind of key it is.

Laptop scissor keys (most Windows laptops)

Under a chiclet laptop key are three parts: the keycap, a small plastic scissor clip (two frames that cross like an X), and a rubber dome that pushes the key back up. The scissor hooks into small metal or plastic tabs on the keyboard, and the keycap snaps onto the scissor.

Designs vary by brand and even by model, so use a neighboring key as your guide. Here’s the general method.

If the keycap came off but the scissor is still in place

  • Press the scissor gently with a plastic tool and make sure it moves up and down freely.
  • Line the keycap up over it the right way round (check the lettering).
  • Press down firmly in the center until you feel or hear it snap. Sometimes one edge needs its own press.

If the scissor came off too

  • Pull the scissor off the keycap if it’s still attached, and note which side faces up. On a nearby key, the inner frame’s swing direction tells you.
  • Check that the rubber dome is centered and springs back upright when pressed. If it’s torn or missing, the key won’t work right even with the cap on.
  • Hook the scissor’s tabs under the keyboard’s retaining hooks on one edge first, then lower it so the other side clicks into its hooks. Apple’s service steps for older MacBook Air keys describe this exact move: fit the scissor openings onto the metal hooks at the lower edge, then slide up until the upper openings catch the upper hooks.
  • Raise and lower the scissor with a plastic tool. It should move freely.
  • Set the cap on top and press down until it snaps.

If a little metal hook is bent, Apple’s service notes say you can try gently bending it back to a uniform 90 degrees. If it’s broken off, it can’t be fixed on its own. On most modern laptops that means a new keyboard, or on some, a new top case.

Spacebar, Shift, Enter, and Backspace

Long keys have a thin metal stabilizer wire underneath so they press down evenly.

  • Check that the wire is still attached to the underside of the keycap, or is sitting in its clips on the keyboard. Your model decides which.
  • Hook the wire ends into their retainers first. This is the fiddly part. Tweezers help.
  • Line up the scissor or clips, then press the key down at both ends and in the middle until everything snaps in.
  • Test it at the ends and the middle. If one side feels mushy or doesn’t come back up, the wire isn’t seated.

MacBooks: know your keyboard first

Apple has used three different designs, and they come off in different directions.

Older MacBook Air and MacBook Pro (before 2016) scissor keys: Apple’s service instructions pry square keys from the lower edge, one corner and then the other. (The Up Arrow is the exception, from its upper edge.)

Butterfly keyboards (about 2015 to 2019): these are the most fragile. The guidance that comes up again and again from repairers, including on iFixit, is to slide a thin plastic card under the top edge and lift gently until the clips release. Prying from the bottom can snap the hooks. To refit, slide the bottom hooks on first, then press the top until it clicks. Honestly, I’d try Apple’s compressed air method from how to clean a keyboard before pulling a butterfly key at all.

Magic Keyboard (2019 16-inch MacBook Pro and later, including Apple silicon models): iFixit’s repair community says these lift from the bottom edge. The top edge acts like a hinge, so you pull the cap toward you after the bottom clips release. Going back on, seat the hinge side first, then press down the other side until it clicks.

On any MacBook, these clips break easily, and Apple usually treats a keyboard as part of the top case. If you’re nervous, an Apple Store or authorized shop can often refit a key faster than you can.

Mechanical keyboard keycaps

These are made to come off.

  • Unplug the keyboard.
  • Slide a wire keycap puller over the cap so the wires catch two opposite edges.
  • Pull straight up with steady pressure. Rocking side to side can stress the switch stem.
  • Most mechanical switches use a cross-shaped “MX-style” stem, so caps from different MX-compatible sets usually fit each other. Some switches use different stems, like low-profile switches and some older or specialty designs, so check before buying a replacement set.
  • To refit, line the cap up with the stem and press straight down until it seats.

Stabilized mechanical keys (Space, Shift, Enter, Backspace) have a stabilizer on each end. Pull these slowly and evenly from both ends. When refitting, line up all three stems, press the middle first, then both ends.

What to do if a clip breaks

It happens, even to careful people.

  • Find your exact model number. It’s on a sticker on the bottom, or in the system info.
  • Search for that model plus “replacement key.” Single replacement keys with the hinge (scissor) included are sold for many popular laptops. Clips that look the same can differ between models, so match the model exactly.
  • If the hook on the keyboard itself broke, a single key won’t fix it. The keyboard needs replacing.
  • If several keys are loose or the key won’t work even with a good cap, go to keyboard keys not working to rule out a bigger keyboard problem.

If you end up opening the laptop to replace the whole keyboard, use the right driver from precision screwdriver set and follow anti-static habits that matter.

FAQ

Can I put a laptop key back on without the clip?

Not reliably. The scissor clip is what holds the cap on and keeps it level. Without it, the cap will wobble or fall off again.

Which side do I pry a laptop key from?

It depends on the design, and on MacBooks it’s opposite between butterfly and Magic Keyboard models. Look at a working key, or search your exact model on iFixit, before prying.

Will any keycap fit my mechanical keyboard?

Most MX-style caps fit MX-style switches. Low-profile and some specialty switches need matching caps.

My spacebar went back on but feels mushy on one side. Why?

The stabilizer wire usually isn’t hooked into one of its retainers. Take it off and seat the wire again.
